ORL surgical procedures
ORL and head and throat surgery at GHC Clinic Prague provides comprehensive ORL care and head and throat surgery.
In addition to comprehensive diagnostics (including endoscopic and audiometric methods), we also offer surgical interventions.
Most common ORL operations
Removal of palatine tonsils, indication: chronic inflammation, recurring tonsillitis, snoring
It is performed under analgosedation or general anaesthesia.
Removal of nasopharyngeal tonsils, indication: the enlargement of nasopharyngeal tonsils particularly in children.
It is performed under general anaesthesia, with endoscope or laser. It is pain-free.
Aesthetic and functional nose operations, indication: obstruction of the nasal passage, chronic rhinitis,
deformation of external nose.
All procedure, even aesthetical ones, should be preceded by endoscopic examination of nose in order to precisely diagnose restricted nasal passage, or to precisely describe the anatomy of nasal ducts before the planned aesthetic surgery.
Paranasal sinuses operation, indication: chronic inflammation of paranasal sinuses, polypi, paranasal sinuses tumours. Most operations are performed with endoscopic methods under general anaesthesia.
Vocal cords operation, indication: removal of nodules, polypi, vocal cords edema, benign neoplasms of salivary glands and thyroid gland.
Operation of external and middle ears, indication: plastic surgery of external ears, auditory passages' restriction, chronic inflammation, hearing loss. Operation is performed under general anaesthesia.
Thyroid gland operation, indication: is determined by attending endocrinologist.
Operation of salivary glands and throat nodules, indication: chronic inflammations, tumours.
Operation of skin lesions on the head and neck, indication: removal of benign and malign formations under local anaesthesia. In some cases, the procedure can be performed with laser.
Operation of snoring
Snoring is not only annoying, but it can also be an illness!
Rhonchopathy or snoring affects up to 60 % of men above 40 years of age and 40 % of women.
The typical vocal expression is caused by the vibration of air passages when muscles loosen during sleep.
The most common causes of snoring are: restricted nasal passage, extended soft palate, large palatial tonsils and tongue root, shorter lower jaw and overweight.
However, some snoring patients suffer from so-called sleep apnea syndrome (SAS) which is manifested by excessive apnoeic pauses (cessations of breath). During apnoeic pauses, blood oxygenation failure occurs. Symptoms of SAS include low quality sleep, frequent wake-ups, daytime sleepiness and fatigue. It may be the main factor in heart, vascular, air passage and central nervous system diseases.
Sleep apnea syndrome can be diagnosed through a sleep study – polysomnography, during which the patient is connected to a device recording data on cardiac activity, breathing and patient's position, as well as vocal expressions during sleep. The record is subsequently evaluated by a doctor and further steps are suggested.
In most patients, problems with snoring can be solved by modern surgical methods.
One of the most effective operations is laser-assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUPP) by which the soft palate is modelled and strengthened. GHC Clinic uses the latest CO2 laser that expands possibilities of the procedure, improves healing and is accompanied by lower post-operation pain compared to other methods of soft palate operation. The operation is performed under local anaesthesia within one-day hospitalization.
In some cases, palatial tonsils have to be reduced or removed. In some patients with nasal passage restriction, an operation to improve it may be necessary as well.
