Current studies show that snoring can have serious social and health effects. The most common surgery for snoring is a laser assisted uvulopalatoplasty (LAUP) on the soft back of the roof the mouth or laser removal of obstructions in the nose (LAMT).
The problem itself is not an illness but a cosmetic defect. A certain group of people who snore can have a more serious disease called sleep apnea. This is characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep which can cause headaches, feelings of not having slept in the mornings, excessive day sleep, memory loss and high blood pressure. A detailed examination is able to diagnose and treat apnea. In other cases the type of treatment depends on the patients wishes to solve a social or cosmetic problem. The operation is performed under local anaesthesia, commonly in the surgery. During the procedure a new roof of the mouth is formed including uvula, the healing process firms them. The final effect which is assessed after some weeks, is generally very good and long-term.
