The appendix is located in the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. Practically, it does nothing for the intestine digestive system but its acute inflammation can present the threat of death. Typically, a sudden stomach ache appears which wakes you up in the middle of the night. You feel sick, like vomiting, dizzy, have raised temperature and a fast pulse. The stomach pain moves gradually from the navel to the lower right quadrant of the abdomen. The stomach is sensitive to the touch. If the doctor is suspicious that there is appendix inflammation, you will stay in a surgical ward in hospital and undergo further checks. The doctor first discovers the detailed course of the symptoms and the period before their occurrence. The doctor checks the tenderness of the painful area and the peritoneum is checked via the rectum.
If you are admitted to the surgical ward, more examinations follow. Your blood and urine is tested, typically you get infusions and eating and drinking is limited. If the doctor decides to perform surgery, he will inform you about the risks and necessity of the operation. Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and afterwards there is a tiny scar on the right lower abdomen. Generally you feel very relieved after the operation. Gradually you receive more substantial food. If no complications occur, the hospitalisation takes 4-5 days.
