A hernia is the bulging of the abdominal wall where abdominal organs are placed. Any activities that increase intra-abdominal pressure can worsen a hernia; such as lifting, straining to have a bowel movement, urinating, coughing and other diseases particularly where the abdominal wall is weakened. The hernia is usually located at a weak part of the abdominal wall such as the groin area, the naval, post-operative scar or other rarer places. It is a very common disorder which can be only treated by surgery. The symptoms are pain and discomfort and the patient can often localise the hernia. Every hernia should be operated if the patients health allows anaesthesia since the trapped tissues can have the blood supply cut off and may cause peritonitis evidenced by severe pain and possibly vomiting.
