The surgical removal of the gallbladder (cholecystectomy) is necessary for patients who have problems with gallstones. These are formed within the body by accretion or concretion of normal or abnormal bile components. They can cause very painful colic and small gallstones can be dangerous. The resulting gallbladder inflammation is accompanied by instant pain and raised temperature. If the gallstones travel further, an obstruction of the biliary tree can cause jaundice; obstruction of the outlet of the pancreatic exocrine system can cause pancreatitis. Before surgery a gastroenterological check is needed as well as an ultrasound abdomen check and blood tests. Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia followed by short hospitalisation.
