The procedure is known as rhinoplasty. Almost everyone has large or small irregularities in the shape or size of their nose. Where an irregular shape, a bump on the nose, too long or too wide a nose becomes aesthetically displeasing, cosmetic surgery can help. The nose operation alters the shape or corrects centre line errors. The aesthetic effect is substantial and has a significant impact on the patients confidence. The operation must be consulted in detail with the plastic surgeon; the reasons for the operation must be clear as well as the expected outcome. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. The nose operation does not leave any externally visible scars since incisions are made inside the nostrils. The surgeon first separates the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying structures, and then reshapes the cartilage and bone in order to remove deformities. The operation takes 1-2 hours depending on the extent of reshaping. A minor nose procedure involves reshaping only the soft parts of nose without involving the bones. The operation and post-operative condition is generally painless. It is advisable to stay in the clinic two days following the operation. After surgery the nose is tamponed for 3 to 5 days and secured by an external cast for at least two weeks. After removing the cast minor swelling lasts some weeks. During the weeks after surgery the patient performs pressure massages which are essential for the final appearance of the nose. The shape of the nose can be considered final after six months, but more likely after twelve months. The resulting effect is permanent.
