Laxity of eyelids is caused by many external and internal factors. The external factors include unhealthy diet, smoking, large weight losses; the internal factors are genetic predisposition, hormonal dysfunctions and age. The causes of puffy eyelids and "bags" under the eyes are fat prolapses - fat which is slipping out through the thin membrane to the area of the eyelids. Generally, upper eyelids should be corrected when an advanced amount of upper eyelid skin is present, the skin may touch or even hang over the eyelashes. Lower eyelids should be looked at when so called garlands are formed from the loose muscles under the eyes, the bags are visible under the eyes and/or it is possible to easily fold the skin using your fingers without disturbing your eyelid.
The upper eyelid operation typically removes the excess skin, sometimes also muscle and fat prolapses if significant. Usually, the procedure is performed under local anaesthesia. The amount of skin removed is very limited due to possible post-operative complications if performed radically. The incisions are made as discreetly as possible - such as at the creases of the upper lids and below the lashes of the lower lids, on the side directed.
