Breast reduction

The most common reason for breast size reduction is serious health issues, but sometimes excessively endowed women just wish to change their appearance by reducing their bust.

Breast reduction is a plastic surgery making excessively large breasts smaller, called mammaplasty in the specialised terminology.

How does the procedure work?

There are a number of various operational procedures to reduce the breast size. They differ in the way of reducing the hypertrophic breast tissue and in the technique of moving the areola, which is placed low on the chest in large breasts. The choice of operational procedure should be based on the need to achieve a favourable breast shape after the reduction. Breastfeeding ability doesn't have to be impaired even after this procedure.

Breast reduction is performed under general anaesthesia. Principle of the operation is shifting the areola to its normal position and removing excessive skin and mammary gland tissue. Remaining lateral laps are connected in the centre of the breast by stitching them together, thus achieving smaller size and conical shape of the breast. The operation usually takes three to four hours. Suction drains are removed after two days; the length of hospitalization is usually two to five days. The resulting scar is typically in the shape of an inverted T.

What happens after the operation?

Your breasts will be fixed with a sterile bandage, later with surgical bra. Stitches are removed within three days of the operation. In first days, patients have to rest and later avoid physical strain, physical activity and, in particular, lifting heavy objects. This recommendation also determines the returning to work – it depends on what kind of work you do.

Healing and subsequent rehabilitation are completely individual, and post-operation difficulties, such as swelling, soreness and scar healing are different in every woman.

The reduction surgery brings out not only favourable cosmetic results since in addition to the reduction, we also do breast modelling, but physical difficulties are alleviated as well.
