What is a filler

It involves the injection of a filling material which effectively reduces the depth of wrinkles or reshapes a particular area of the face – it fills the lips, the areas under the eyes, cheeks etc. The fillers are usually based on the hyaluronic acid; these are the most natural for the body because the hyaluronic acid is normally present in the subcutis. In some cases, other materials, such as calcium hydroxylapatite, are preferred. The filler is chosen in terms of the condition of the given site and of the purpose and it is always agreed between the client and the physician.

Benefits of hyaluronic acid

  • It is a natural and essential component of the skin.
  • It intensely moisturizes the skin, ensures its elasticity, firmness and youthful appearance.
  • Over time, the amount of hyaluronic acid in the body decreases. Between the ages of forty to fifty, up to 50% of hyaluronic acid disappears from the body.
  • Hyaluronic acid has been used in aesthetic medicine but also in other fields of medicine for many years.

Who is a good candidate for the treatment

The reason for the procedure is the presence of unwanted hollowing (wrinkle, depression) or just an effort to increase the volume of the site in question. The treatment is intended for everyone who wants to effectively fight the signs of ageing.

Before the Procedure

If you consider the application of a filler, it is always necessary to undergo an initial consultation with a physician, unless you are a regular client of the GHC Dermatology Department. The dermatologist will examine you, evaluate the indication for the filler application and the skin condition, hear your expectations, recommend the most suitable course of action and suggest treatment alternatives, if available.

For some areas, needle shaping or plastic surgery may be an option.

How is the filler application performed

Filler application is performed by injections in a doctor's office, usually without local anaesthesia. In some sensitive areas, a numbing cream can be applied; around lips, an injectable anaesthetic may be used locally.

After the procedure

After filler application, a visible and adequate effect should be obtained immediately. However, at the same time, mild swelling occurs which slightly masks this effect. Typically, this swelling is absorbed within approximately 3 days, however, it depends on the nature of the filler. The remaining oedema, usually discreet, can be visible for up to 3 weeks. Therefore, details of the achieved effect are only assessed 3 – 4 weeks later. If you spend time in the sun, the bruised area should be protected with a sunscreen with SPF 50 to avoid possible pigmentation.
