What is a liposuction of thighs

Liposuction or suction of fat is a procedure, during which adipose depots are removed from problematic areas. It is one of the most popular plastic surgery procedures.

Advantages of tumescent liposuction over conventional liposuction:

  • Shorter surgery and recovery times
  • Higher amount of fat tissue sucked out per minute
  • Gentler and less invasive movement of cannula in subcutaneous fat deposits
  • Reduced postoperative pain, bruising and swelling

Who is a good candidate for the procedure

In particular, liposuction is recommended to individuals who, due to hereditary predisposition, develop fat pads which do not respond to diet or consistent exercise.

Before the procedure

If you consider a liposuction of the thighs, it is always necessary to undergo a non-binding initial consultation with a plastic surgeon, who will assess whether the procedure is right for you, explain the technique and the scope of the surgery, the type of anaesthesia, as well as the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the surgery, as well as your expectations and concerns about the liposuction results.

When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medications. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing after the liposuction.

How is liposuction of the thighs performed

The procedure is performed under local or general anaesthesia. Saline solution also containing an anaesthetic and adrenaline is injected into the area of liposuction by means of a fine needle. This makes sure that the procedure is painless and bloodless. By means of a cannula which is inserted under the skin through small incisions, the adipose tissue is disintegrated and the released fat is sucked away by an aspirator.

After the procedure

After tumescent liposuction, you may temporarily experience bruises, swelling, numbness, itching, a burning sensation and pain. Early physiotherapy on the bed and out of the bed is recommended. Wear an elastic girdle 24 hours a day for 14 days, then at least 12 hours a day until the swelling is fully resolved. Perform pressure massage by means of a roller through the girdle and lymphatic drainage daily 3 weeks after the procedure until the swelling is resolved. Apply a moisturizing lotion to the skin of the surgery area. It is imperative to restrict tanning for several months after the procedure. It will take 3 – 6 months or longer for the swelling to disappear. After a liposuction of the thighs, return to normal activity is usually possible within 2 weeks.
