What is a labiaplasty
Labiaplasty or plastic surgery of the labia allows a reduction of inner or outer labia and effectively helps to address their possible asymmetry.
Who is a good candidate for the procedure
If inner labia grow to an abnormal size or length and then protrude between the outer labia, it can be an inconvenience both for aesthetic and practical reasons (e.g. in sports, hygiene etc.) and it can reduce self-confidence in the intimate life.
Before the procedure
If you consider a labiaplasty, it is always necessary to undergo a non-binding initial consultation with a plastic surgeon, who will assess whether the procedure is right for you, explain the technique of the surgery, the type of anaesthesia, as well as the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the surgery, as well as your expectations and concerns about the labiaplasty results.
When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medications. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing after the labiaplasty.
How is labiaplasty performed
The procedure is usually performed on a day case basis under local anaesthesia or analgosedation/general anaesthesia, in which case the patient can stay in the medical facility overnight. After accurate measurement, the excess tissue is removed.
After the procedure
A semi-seated position preferably on the back and cold compresses on the treated sites over the bandage are recommended. Shower twice daily starting from day 2; apply ointment over stitches after each shower. After the scar is healed, apply as necessary. After labiaplasty, return to normal activity is usually possible within 5 – 7 days, have sex and play sports is possible three weeks after the procedure. It may take several weeks before the swelling disappears completely.
