What is a rhinoplasty
Rhinoplasty or plastic surgery of the nose is a surgical procedure aimed at a change of the outer appearance of the nose and at improving breathing through the nose.
Who is a good candidate for the procedure
The nose is the centre of the face and helps create its character. Many people feel uncomfortable about the shape or size of their nose and it lowers their self-confidence. Rhinoplasty can have a considerable aesthetic effect, with a strong impact on the psychology of the patient. This type of surgery is performed after completed growth and puberty. The upper age limit is not fixed but it is ideal to undergo nose surgery before the age of 35; after that skin elasticity decreases.
Before the procedure
If you consider a rhinoplasty, it is always necessary to undergo a non-binding initial consultation with a plastic surgeon, who will assess whether the procedure is right for you, explain the technique of the surgery, the type of anaesthesia, as well as the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the surgery, as well as your expectations and concerns about the rhinoplasty results.
When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medications. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing after the rhinoplasty.
How is a rhinoplasty performed
The purpose of rhinoplasty is to change the shape of the nose by changing the position and size of the nose cartilage and bone, as well as of the cartilage of the nasal septum. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia with intravenous sedation or under general anaesthesia. The plastic surgery of the nose leaves no external visible scars as it uses a closed approach. The procedure itself or the postoperative condition is not painful.
After the procedure
After rhinoplasty, you may temporarily experience bruises also in the area of eyes and eyelids, headaches and swelling lasting several weeks or months. A semi-seated position and cold compresses on the treated sites over the bandage, a splint for 14 days and a tamponade for 3 – 10 days are recommended. Three weeks after the surgery, perform daily pressure massage after a practice in front of a mirror. Apply a moisturizing lotion to the skin of the surgery area. A check will take place 6 – 8 days after the surgery. After the rhinoplasty, a return to normal activity is usually possible within 2 – 3 weeks. Achieving full final effect may take up to 1 year.
