What is a tonsillectomy
Tonsillectomy is a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils.
Who is a good candidate for the treatment
The reason of the procedure is chronic inflammation of the tonsils, an abscess beside or behind the tonsil, a tumour or if the patient is at risk of complications as a result of the spreading of the infection from the tonsil to other organs in the body.
Before the procedure
During the pre-operative assessment, the physician will explain the surgery technique and the type of anaesthesia; you will also be informed about the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the surgery, as well as your expectations and concerns. One week before surgery, an internal medicine preoperative evaluation, including basic laboratory tests and an ECG, is required. One day before tonsillectomy, the Client is admitted to the ward, examined by the doctor and, one more time, given information about the procedure and the course of hospitalisation.
How is tonsillectomy performed
The surgery is usually performed under general anaesthesia; in women, preferably immediately after their period. The surgeon removes the tonsils located in their beds in the transition area between the oral cavity and pharynx.
After the procedure
After surgical tonsillectomy, the following measures should be taken: rest, ice packs on the throat, gargling from day 1 after the surgery at least 5 times a day, showering with lukewarm (not hot) water and avoiding hot and irritating foods or drinks. It is recommended to chew fruit-flavoured chewing gums, eat ice cream, as well as to avoid smoking or drinking alcoholic drinks.
