What is a testicle fixation
Orchidopexy or testicle fixation is a surgical procedure, in which the testicle is sutured in the scrotum to prevent its torsion and strangulation.
Who is a good candidate for the procedure
The fixation is carried out in the event that the testicle is mobile, it can twist around its axis and get strangulated; the procedure is thus performed as prevention. In case of testicular hypermobility, the patient may experience pain attacks. There is a risk of torsion of the testicle – this surgery must then be performed as an emergency within 6 hours after the first symptoms. In that case, it is advisable also to fix the other healthy testicle.
Before the procedure
During the pre-operative assessment, the physician will explain the surgery technique and the type of anaesthesia; you will also be informed about the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation, you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the surgery, as well as your expectations and concerns.
When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medication. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing after the testicle fixation.
How is the testicle fixation performed
The procedure is usually conducted under general anaesthesia. The scrotum is opened surgically and the testicle is fixed to the scrotum wall by means of sutures.
After the procedure
After the surgery, mild pain in the wound is possible. Please avoid major physical activity for about 14 days after the surgery.
