Frenulotomy

Diagnosis, treatment and prevention / Urology

What is penile frenuloplasty

The frenulum connects the inner leaf of the prepuce to the glans penis under the urethral orifice. A frenuloplasty or plastic surgery of the frenulum is a surgical alteration of a short frenulum.

Who is a good candidate for the procedure

Frenuloplasty is intended for men with a short frenulum that may cause frequent injuries during the sexual intercourse or even premature ejaculation.

Before the procedure

During the pre-operative assessment, the physician will explain the surgery technique and the type of anaesthesia; you will also be informed about the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation, you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the procedure, as well as your expectations and concerns.

When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medication. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing after the frenuloplasty.

How is frenuloplasty performed

Under local anaesthesia, an incision is created in the frenulum to change its shape; then several stitches are places.

After the procedure

Sexual abstinence until the wound heals (approx. 2–3 weeks). In case of increased friction with underwear, discomfort can persist on a case-by-case basis.
