Interruption of vas deferens

Diagnosis, treatment and prevention / Urology

What is a vas deferens

Vasa deferentia form a part of the spermatic cord and carry the sperm from the epididymis to the prostate gland.

Who is a good candidate for vasectomy

Vasectomy or interruption of vas deferens is intended for men who no longer wish to conceive a child. It is a so-called male sterilisation.

Before the procedure

During the pre-operative assessment, the physician will explain the surgery technique and the type of anaesthesia; you will also be informed about the possible risks. During the consultation, you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the vasectomy, as well as your expectations and concerns.

When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medication. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing.

How is vasectomy performed

It involves a minimally invasive and irreversible interruption and ligation of the vasa deferentia with scrotal access by means of small incisions.

After the procedure

It is virtually a painless procedure. Discomfort may be felt by some patients.
