What is the removal of the testicle
Orchiectomy or removal of the testicle is a surgical procedure in which e.g. an atrophic and painful testicle or a testicle due to severe inflammation are removed. Alternatively, it is a radical surgery – a removal of a testicle from the groin because of a tumour. The main condition of a successful treatment of testicular cancer consists in an early radical surgery as described above.
Who is a good candidate for the procedure
Inflammations of the testicles mostly develop in older age. Testicular tumours develop in younger men. Problems with atrophic testicles, their hypermobility, etc., may be present since childhood and may persist into adulthood.
Before the procedure
During the pre-operative assessment, the physician will explain the surgery technique and the type of anaesthesia; you will also be informed about the possible risks associated with the surgery. During the consultation, you can ask any questions, in particular those related to the course of the surgery, as well as your expectations and concerns.
When making a binding appointment, you will be given and explained instructions on how to prepare for the procedure, as well as information regarding eating, drinking, smoking and taking or withdrawing from certain medication. Compliance with all these instructions is necessary and will facilitate a smooth procedure and seamless healing after the removal of the testicle.
How is the removal of the testicle performed
The procedure is usually conducted under general anaesthesia. An incision is made in the scrotum or, in case of a tumour, above the inguinal canal.
After the procedure
In the postoperative period, heavy physical strain should be avoided, especially in terms of lifting heavy objects. The function of the removed testicle is taken over by the other testicle, therefore there is no loss of fertility or hormonal function (if the second testicle normal).
